PROPERTY & EVIDENCE
The Ephrata Police Department's Property and Evidence System has several functions. The main duty is to ensure that all evidence collected by officers in the course of their duties is securely held and accounted for. Another responsibility is to store inmate and found property under safekeeping until such property can be returned to rightful owner.
The Ephrata Police Department takes in found property into safekeeping. Any person who finds lost property within the City of Ephrata can turn the item into the Police Department. Officers and staff will search for an owner and hold the item for 60 days. If you are interested in claiming the item you found, should no owner be found or item is not claimed, there are a few steps you must take. RCW 63.21.010 states that the finder:
Before evidence can be released, the case must be adjudicated with no pending appeal or the Ephrata Police Department must receive written permission to release any evidence from the Grant County Prosecutor's Office. If more than one defendant is involved in a case, evidence will be held until all pending charges are adjudicated. After the case is adjudicated and permission to release the evidence is received, the Evidence Official will send out a postcard notification giving you 60 days from the date the postcard is sent to claim your property.
For other property and evidence questions, please contact the Evidence Official Monday through Friday 8 am to 12 pm and 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm at (509) 754-2491.
